On
the road today leaving for the big battle with Tulane tommorrow night in New
Orleans. In my seven years as the Voice of Womens' Basketball, this will
be the biggest regular season game I've called. The two first place teams face
off with just four games left after.
What a fun ride it has been this season, just like I thought, this team started to really get going around Christmas. I knew this could be a top-four team in the league, but playing for first this late in the season is defenitly a treat. Regardless of what happens, we'll still have another very tough game at UTEP on Saturday night.
Baseball opens the season this weekend at FedExPark. I went over there today, and it's a busy place. It's getting all cleaned up for the weekend. Coach Rock really scheduled a challenge for his team to open the season. Middle Tennessee is coming off a 40-win year, and another NCAA appearance for the Blue Raiders. They also feature one of the best players in the country in All American Bryce Brentz. Hopefully the weather holds out and they get all three games in. WUMR Sports Director Andrew Vandeventer will fill-in for me this weekend. Andrew called our games at Troy last season, so we're happy to have him back.

A very good opening weekend, especially considering the opponent - do you think this is one of the better starts that Memphis has had to their baseball season?
Although the 1-1 start against at top-40 team is good, the best start in the Schoenrock era was probably in 2006 when we won at Alabama 2-0 on opening day, then beat Notre Dame and Oklahoma in Millington to start the season 3-0. That year, we were 32-28 and the 19 game improvement over 2005 was the second biggest in nation.
The 1981 NCAA team won their first 11 and were 21-2 after the first 23 games. They finished 48-11-1.
