Doing Work With Zurc Blog #2

Hey everyone! Another update from Kingsport, Tenn., is here. First, I want to reflect on some news I got this week. As many of you know, I was named C-USA Male Athlete of the Year. I was in shock when Coach Rock called me Monday. I never thought I would win an award outside of baseball. I want to thank all my coaches and teammates again for their unbelievable support.

Greetings from Kingsport, TN! This is my new home away from home from now until the end of August as I begin my professional baseball career. This is one of the most exciting times of my life. I have been working towards this dream since I was about 5 years old.

For those listeners to Tiger baseball, you've heard me reference the possibility of the NCAA tournament and the RPI the last couple of weeks. For those who are curious, here's my take on our chances.

It's been an up and down year for the Tigers as they find themselves in first place in CUSA with 20 games left, but on the bubble for an NCAA. We're coming off a sweep at UAB, following three straight losses.

Memphis baseball is wrapping up their fall season and one thing has stood out to me, the new "dead" bats. The new NCAA standards for bats go into effect on January 1st, 2011, but most, if not all, college teams have been using them this fall.

Our first football broadcast is getting close and I've been spending the last week testing phone lines at various locations to get ready. The new "Tiger Lane" looks better every time I go out to the Liberty Bowl.

In the quest to fill my spare time in the summer, I decided to check in on how our Tiger Baseball Pros are doing, here is the list. Also hope you check out Brennon Martin's blog (located here), great to hear from him in his first year with the Royals organization.

TIGER FANS:

Welcome to Surprise, AZ, the sixth fastest growing city in Arizona. It's is located 20 miles northwest of Phoenix and about four hours and 49 minutes away from Vegas... but who's counting. Surprise is the spring training home of the Kansas City Royals, as well as the home of one of KC's four rookie teams, the AZL Royals. My name is Brennon Martin and I was a 4-year starting pitcher for the U of M who was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to play the sport that I love at its highest level.

Checking in with you this summer. We're getting great news about our latest baseball pro's. Ryan Fraser and Brennon Martin are doing very well. Congrats to both for being drafted as well as Drew Martinez, looks like Drew will be returning for his junior year. There are updates for our summer wood-bat league players on the baseball page of the website (www.gotigersgo).

Well, the 2010 baseball season wrapped up today at Cougar Field in Houston, what a way to end it against ECU. Tyler Huelsing homered in his last college at-bat to win the game 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth. Senior Brennon Martin threw a complete game and retired the last 18 Pirates for the win. Really happy for the seniors and this team, that finished 28-30. Coach Rock's Tigers have a very experienced line-up returning, we had 4 sophomores and a freshman in the line-up today that will all be coming back. If we can replace Martin and Fraser on the weekends and shore up our bullpen, the next two years could be really fun.

It's day two of the Conference USA Tournament. One word could describe day one, HOT. It will be that way again today, and we'll play in the heat of the day when we face Marshall at 3:00.

It's practice day at the Conference USA Tournament in Houston, Memphis was at Cougar Field from 12:30-1:30 this afternoon. Pretty good workout for the team in the heat and humidity. Doesn't seem like our two 11am games will be that bad, but the 3:00 game on Thursday with Marshall will be really hot and humid.

Tiger baseball is still on the road. We'll leave from Hattiesburg this morning and make the seven hour ride to Houston to the Conference Tournament at the University of Houston.

Well, we wrapped up our first season at FedExPark last night with a win over Murray State. It was a really nice year in the inaugural season at the newly renovated facility. Again, a big thanks to FedEx for the gift. A lot of what was done could not be seen by the general public, but it was really nice for the players to be able to go directly from their dugout to the locker-room and the team was able to train on site in the new turf room.
