ORLANDO, FLA. -

The Memphis pom squad captured a 14th national championship with a title in the Division IA Hip Hop competition Sunday at the 2012 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship, produced by Universal Cheerleaders Association and Universal Dance Association. The event was held at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando.

The Tigers edged LSU and Cincinnati, which finished second and third, respectively, for the Hip Hop National Championship. These are the same two programs that Memphis edged for the Hip Hop title in 2011. This is the fourth national championship in the Hip Hop division for the Memphis squad. The pom squad won consecutive championships from 1986-1994, and also took top honors in 2000, 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2012. The last four titles have been in the Hip Hop category.

Memphis earned second-place honors in the Division IA Pom competition, finishing behind Minnesota. Last season, Memphis pom was third behind Minnesota and Cincinnati. The UC Bearcats placed third this season behind the Tigers.

The all-girl cheer squad was tabbed second behind Indiana University in its finals on Saturday, and Memphis also took second place in the co-ed partner stunt division with squad members Bethany Jackson and Josh Gallia competing for the Tigers.

The Tigers placed fourth in the Division IA Co-Ed Cheer competition. Kentucky won the championship, followed by Alabama and UCF.

The Memphis Spirit Squads are coached by Frankie Conklin, Carol Lloyd and Chad Odle, and consist of a varsity co-ed squad, a varsity all-girls squad, a dance team and the Tiger mascot, Pouncer.
