Winn to Assume New Role with M-Club
March 28, 2014
Winn has amassed over 40 years of distinguished service as a member of the Tigers' athletic department. Most recently he served as the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs where he oversaw media relations, marketing and the Memphis spirit squads while also managing outside contracts and the department's relationship with Tiger Sports Properties.
"Bob Winn has made a tremendous impact on the University of Memphis over the past four decades," Bowen said. "We are grateful for his contributions and appreciate his willingness to continue in a new role with the M-Club. Developing meaningful relationships with our former student-athletes is a priority for us and Bob's historical knowledge, experience and long-standing relationships with many former Tigers will be major assets in this effort."
Winn will be charged with assisting M-Club Director Dwight Boyd with increasing membership and creating new avenues for engagement with former Tigers. Winn will be responsible for creating a monthly M-Club newsletter, updating the directory and adding content to the M-Club website. He will assist with the coordination of reunions, special events and the annual M-Club Hall of Fame banquet.
He will continue in his role as curator of the Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway Athletics Hall of Fame and will coordinate all tours of the Hall of Fame exhibits. He will assist with the nominations process for Hall of Fame inductions and will also aid in the nomination of former U of M student-athletes for national hall of fames.
"It's hard to believe that 40 years have passed since I started working at the University of Memphis," Winn said. "I guess that when you really enjoy what you are doing, it's not really considered work but a passion.
"I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to Athletic Director Tom Bowen and his staff for allowing me to continue to do what I love; working with our student-athletes, Tiger alums and fans and media members who have all become dear friends over the years.
"Dwight Boyd and I have spoken several times already about our mission to locate and reconnect with all of our former student-athletes. We are driven to get the Tiger family together."
Winn is a 1974 graduate of then-Memphis State and has spent his entire professional career with the University of Memphis athletic department. He spent 17 years as the Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations where he helped in the promotion of nearly 50 All-Americans. He has also served as the tournament host for numerous NCAA and conference tournaments and has been the media coordinator for the PGA Tour stop in Memphis for the past 40 years.
Winn was inducted in the All-American Football Foundation Hall of Fame in May of 1998, receiving the Scoop Hudgins Award for media relations. In 2008 he received the Herbert L. Williams Outstanding Career Achievement Award from the U of M National Journalism Association.
