Welcome to Andy Metcalf's MLS Journal.
The recent Memphis soccer alumni and DC United MLS draft choice will update fans on everything going with his quest to play at the highest level. Check back requently for a new entry and go Tigers! Journal Entry 1 Getting drafted by D.C. United was a complete surprise to me. I knew the draft was happening, but I didn't think I would actually get drafted. Needless to say, I was very happy and excited about the opportunity. I actually found out from my sister that I was drafted as I was coming home from class and was unable to watch the draft on the computer. After that, the calls from friends and family came pouring in. I was surprised at the amount of people who called and was very grateful for all of them. It seemed like the next day I was traveling to Bradenton, Fla., to meet up with the team for the first preseason camp. It went well down there, and I was invited to join them overseas to Spain. It was there where I signed the contract, which was a big moment for me. After Spain, the team came back to Washington D.C. for a week before heading to Charleston, S.C. for the third and final preseason camp. Now, I am back in D.C. after driving up from Memphis yesterday. Thus far I feel like I have played pretty well and I'm trying to learn and soak up as much as possible. I have a lot to learn from the likes of Jaime Moreno and Ben Olsen! There was an excitement throughout the team as opening day got closer and closer. The team opened on Sunday, April 2 against the New York Red Bulls, formerly the Metrostars. We tied 2-2. I'd love to answer questions in my upcoming releases.
