One Hundred Forty Nine Tigers Named to 3.0 Club
July 11, 2007 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - One hundred and forty-nine University of Memphis student-athletes were named to the Tiger 3.0 Club it was announced by Dr. Joe Luckey, Director of Athletic Academic Services. "On behalf of the athletic academic services staff, I would like to congratulate the Tiger 3.0 student-athletes for the 2007 Spring Semester," Luckey said. "We are very proud of their hard work and their effort to be the best that they can in the classroom. We have almost reached our initial goal when we came to Memphis five years ago, whereby 50 percent of the student-athletes would earn a 3.0 semester GPA or higher. The university, athletic department, and coaching staffs have done a phenomenal job supporting the student-athletes and their academic endeavors." Football led the way with 27 entries on the semester list, while baseball was second with 19 student-athletes with a 3.0 or higher GPA during the spring 2007 semester. Women's soccer led all women's sports with 15 3.0 students, followed by 13 for both women's track and field and volleyball. Softball and men's track were the other two sports with double-digit 3.0 student-athletes during the spring, as each program had 10 3.0 students. Of the teams who were competing in-season during the spring of 2007, baseball and softball had double-digit 3.0 students, as did both men's and women's track. Baseball made its first NCAA appearance in 13 years, while softball qualified for the Conference USA tournament in just its second year in existence. The men's track team won the C-USA Outdoor championship, as did the Lady Tiger golf team, which placed all seven of its team members on the Tiger 3.0 club. Men's golf placed eight of its 12 members on the Tiger 3.0 club, while men's tennis placed six of its eight teammates on the list. Women's tennis had four entries on the 3.0 Club while competing during the spring.
