The University of Memphis placed a heavy emphasis on the defensive front as the Tigers announced Wednesday a signing class which includes nine student-athletes who play either defensive line or linebacker positions. Memphis announced a group of 22 student-athletes who signed either National Letters of Intent or admission agreements.

"We had a clear mission when you look at our current roster," said Memphis head coach Justin Fuente who begins his third season as the Tigers' head coach. "A bunch of our defensive guys were seniors and we felt that it was important to target the front line of our defense for the next couple of years. We are going to be hit pretty heavily on the defensive side during the next two years and it is important to work in new guys for the future."

For Fuente, who was hired in December of 2011, this marked just the second signing class in which they were able to go through a complete evaluation and recruiting process.

"It was a lot of work and I am very proud of the coaching staff for the work that each of them put in to make this a successful day," Fuente said. "I am also proud of the guys on our team for hosting our kids as they came on their official visits.

"There are a lot of people who do not get the credit they deserve as they helped us recruit. Our administration has given us great support in our ability to recruit and reach out to everyone."

The Tigers' coaching staff now turns its attention to getting ready for spring camp.

Memphis will hold 15 spring practices beginning on March 2nd. The team is planning to played a true spring game under the lights of Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on April 11th.
