"We're excited about this signing class," said Memphis football coach Justin Fuente who will guide the Tigers into the BIG EAST Conference in the fall. "I think it's another step in the right direction to building our football program.
"We had a pretty big emphasis on offensive lineman and skill kids on offense and defensive backfield and linebackers on defense," he said. "We had to fill a few holes in the specialty area and the kicking game. We look forward to getting them in the program and putting them to work. "
The Memphis coaching staff took care of needs on offense by signing six offensive linemen - including two junior college transfers - along with four, high school running backs and a pair of junior college wide receivers.
"We made it a pretty big emphasis for us to go sign some guys at the tailback position," Fuente said. "I'm excited about Brandon Hayes and what he and others did for us, but we need to continue to upgrade at that spot. I think it's a very important spot. If you look at the guys we brought in, I think they all have a little different skill set, which excites me."
In addition to the running backs and receivers, the Tigers signed athlete Sam Craft who was the Tennessee Class AAA tournament Most Valuable Player in leading Craigmont to a basketball state championship his sophomore season.
Craft transferred to Olive Branch (Miss.) for his senior season and last fall was named the Mississippi High School Activities Association All-Region 1 6A Most Valuable Player on offense. He passed for 1,798 yards and 14 touchdowns and also came close to rushing for 1,000 yards, finishing with 974 yards and 16 touchdowns.
"Where and what he does for us, we'll just see," Fuente said of Craft, whose father played football at Memphis in the late 1980s. "I think he has a large skill set that transposes well into what we would like to become offensively. He's somebody that I'm excited about, and I'm happy he chose to come to the University of Memphis. He came here for all of the right reasons."
The Tigers' defensive signees include five defensive backs.
"We're going to throw it out there and let guys go compete for jobs," Fuente said. "I don't want any freshman to come in and just assume he's going to be redshirted. I want them to prepare as if they're going to go play. We'll see how it works out.
"We'll play them as much as they're ready to play - whether it be in the defensive backfield or at running back, quarterback or any other position. I look forward to facilitating some of the competition that comes with depth."
Memphis' coaching staff will now turn its attention to preparing for spring camp which opens Feb. 28th. The Tigers will play its annual Spring Game April 6th at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
