Thank you for your interest in the Spirit program at the University of Memphis. Not only are we fortunate to have one of the top educational institutions in the country, but one of the finest spirit programs as well. We are very serious about the excellence of our department and are actively seeking quality individuals to utilize their talents, while pursuing a higher education, to be a part of the Tiger Spirit Squads.

We are always looking for quality people to fulfill the role of ambassadors for the University, and new talent to strengthen our competitive squads, which rank among the nation's best consistently each year.

Tryouts for the Coed, All-Girl, and Dance squads will be held May 11 & 12th, 2013. To be eligible to tryout, you must have a letter of acceptance from the University of Memphis admissions office, or currently be enrolled as a full-time student at the University. You must also submit the registration form with a photo, the consent to participate form and a physician's physical release form (dated and signed by a doctor within the last 12 months). The tryout fee is $25 (cash or check, checks made payable to University of Memphis Spirit Squads).

The completed packet of forms and photo must be mailed together to the cheerleading office (Attn: Frankie Conklin, 203 Athletic Office Building, Memphis, TN 38152) or turned in to Martha Woods in the Athletic Office Building (Room 203), no later than May 3, 2012. Once we have received all of your completed information, you will be placed on the tryout roster and will be required to attend the tryout on the dates listed below.

Saturday, May 11 (9 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
Sat. - Where: Memphis Elite All-Star gym, 1385 Big Orange
CHEER - Learn fight song and cheer, stunt groups will be determined for all required/optional skills
Girls wear long sportsbras, cheer shorts, cheer shoes, hair with bow and full makeup are required for the clinic/tryout process
Guys wear nice t-shirts, long shorts, cheer shoes and must be clean shaven

DANCE -- across the floor technique and learn a routine that consists of pom, jazz and hiphop choreography. This will be judged in groups of 3 on Sunday (Dancers will also have a chance to work on individual 1 minute routines that will be judged on Sunday)
Dancers wear black sports bra and black booty shorts with jazz shoes. Full hair and makeup are required for the clinic/tryout process..

Sunday, May 12 (12 p.m. dance tryouts; 2:30 p.m. Cheer tryouts) - Tryouts

TRYOUTS - Mike Rose Theater - CAMPUS OF UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

DANCE will be judged on skills that include the following:
*Kicks, leaps, flexibility, pirouettes, ala seconde turns
*overall style and image.
*Group routine learned at the clinic
*1 minute routine that is a style of your choice

CHEER will be judged on the following:
* running tumbling pass (your best running pass-full, backspring back, backhandspring series, etc.)
* standing tumbling (your best standing skill - tuck, toe back, standing full, backhandspring back, etc.)
* cheer that is learned at the clinic with incorporated tuck and stunt
* fight song that is learned at clinic with incorporated stunt
* optional stunt (this is your best skill that you want to be judged on)
(Coed optional skills include: rewinds, front/back handspring to stunts, double downs)
(All-girl optional skills include: full up stunts, flexibility skills w/double down)
* Coed stunts judged will include, but not limited to: toss shoulders, toss ext/lib and full up skills
* All-Girl stunts judged will consist of extension and lib

TRYOUTS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR A MINIMUM DONATION OF $5.00 TO THE SPIRIT SQUADS.

Note: Transportation and housing will be the responsibility of each student. The Holiday Inn is located on the campus of the University of Memphis and is recommended for lodging.
