No. 9 Rifle Closes Out Regular Season at NCAA Qualifier; Hermsmeier Receives NCAA Individual Bid
Feb. 21, 2013
MURRAY, Ky. - The No. 9 Memphis rifle team was at Murray State on Saturday looking to qualify for NCAA Rifle Championships as team for the first time in program history.
Despite finishing third in the qualifier behind No. 5 Jacksonville State and No. 7 Nebraska, the Tigers' aggregate score of 4,608 was enough to get them into the tournament.
Memphis needed to jump Nebraska one spot to qualify but the Cornhuskers posted a 4,650 in the qualifier to put it our of reach for the Tigers.
Individually, junior Dan Hermsmeier qualified for his third consecutive NCAA appearance as an individual. Unlike the previous two years when he competed in Smallbore, Hermsmeier this time got the nod in Air Rifle after tying for second at the NCAA qualifier, posting a 588.
Hermsmeier also finished top 10 in the Smallbore qualifier shooting a 577 for a tied at the seven spot but only received a bid for Air Rifle.
Hermsmeier wasn't the only Tiger to put together solid performances at the qualifier as freshman Beth Lee finished only five points behind him in Air Rifle, tied for 16th. Senior Kelly Audet followed Lee by just a point and tied for 19th.
In Smallbore Audet shot a top 15 performance, notching a 573 to post an aggregate of 1,155 to close out her collegiate regular season career. Sophomore Max Burkhardt finished with a 570 Smallbore score and tied for 16th.
The Tigers look to capture their first Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championship this weekend at Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss. Individual Smallbore will begin at Noon on Friday, February 22.
