Tiger Rifle Takes Sixth at GARC Championships

OXFORD, Miss. - The University of Memphis rifle team shot an aggregate score of 4631 to place sixth at the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships hosted by Ole Miss, over the weekend. The Tigers shot scores of 2295 in smallbore and 2336 in air rifle at Oxford's Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center. Memphis' efforts were paced by sophomore Dan Hermsmeier, who rifled 579 in smallbore and 590 in air rifle for an aggregate total of 1169, which was good for 10th place. True freshman Max Burkhardt trailed Hermsmeier, shooting scores of 572 in smallbore and 581 in air rifle (1153 aggregate) to place 22nd. Sophomore Linn Larsen (574-smallbore, 575-air rifle) and senior Kaitlynn Lee (570-smallbore, 579-air rifle) finished with identical scores of 1149. Junior Kelly Audet shot 560 in smallbore and 586 in air rifle to place 32nd, while senior Jessica Phenis scored 571 in the smallbore discipline and a 574 air rifle mark. No. 2-ranked West Virginia claimed their third consecutive conference title with a team score of 4681. While the GARC Championships mark the conclusion of the season for the majority of the Tiger shooters, Memphis' Dan Hermsmeier will continue training for the NCAA Championships, which are set to be contested March 9-10 at The Ohio State University. Hermsmeier, a 2011 second-team All-American, qualified to compete in the smallbore discipline.
