No. 6 Rifle Falls Behind at GARC Championships, Finish Fifth

OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 6 Memphis rifle team closed out the regular season at the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships over the weekend, falling behind four top ten programs to finish fifth with an aggregates score of 4634.
Top ranked West Virginia claimed the title while Kentucky followed them in second, Nebraska took the third spot and Army finished fourth.
Senior Dan Hermsmeier led the Tigers on day one in the small bore competition, shooting a 578 and finishing tied for 11th overall. Hermsmeier missed the small bore finals by just two points, behind Nebraska's Denise Martin.
Sophomore Elizabeth Lee was the only other Memphis shooter to land in the top 20 with a 576 and the 16th best score of the day.
Rounding out the top five small bore scores were Amy Fister (574), Max Burkhardt (574), and Nate Brandeburg (561). The Tigers posted an aggregate small bore mark of 2297, two points behind Army's 2299.
On the final day of the tournament, it was Hermsmeier leading the way in Air Rifle as well, qualifying for the finals with in the sixth place spot with 591. Hermsmeier held onto his sixth place spot in the finals.
Fister and Lee finished 30th and 33rd, Fister posting a 584 and Lee with a mark of 583.
Brandeburg and Burkhardt closed out Memphis' top five, also finishing just a point apart, Brandeburg with 579 and Burkhardt a 578 to help the Tigers to an aggregate of 2337.
Memphis will now get ready to head to Murray, KY for the programs second NCAA Tournament appearance next weekend. Competition starts on Friday, March 14 and runs through March 16.
