Oct. 6, 2008
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - - With an aggregate team score of 4,541 points, the Memphis rifle team edged Ole Miss in the season-opening Memphis Open. The Tigers placed second in the Air Rifle competition, led by freshman Jenna Quick's 583, which placed her eighth overall in her first collegiate competition. She was followed by senior Andrew Hahn, who finished ninth in the air rifle competition, also with a 583. Another freshman, Jessica Phenis, finished third on the squad with a 578, good enough for 14th overall, while Keegan Singleton rounded out the team scorers with a 571, putting him 18th in the field of 72 shooters. Competing as individuals, Greg Morton finished 20th with a 570, while Kaitlynn Lee finished 25th with a 567. Rustin Russell was 26th with a 566 and Amelia Stacey was 30th with a 564. Alex Watson and Luke Ryerkerk rounded out the Memphis shooters with a 564 and 548, respectively. Jacksonville State won the air rifle part of the event with a 2341. JSU placed four shooters in the top five of the individual scores, led by Phillip Huckaby's 588. In the smallbore event, Memphis edged Ole Miss, 2226-2206. Keegan Singleton led all shooters with a 572, including a 99 in position one. Rustin Russell placed fifth with a 562, while Alex Watson was sixth with a 557. Memphis then placed in positions eight through 13 to garner enough team points to edge the Rebels.
Both the air rifle and smallbore scores were added together for an aggregate team score, but since just two teams shot in both events, the Tigers prevailed over Ole Miss, with Jacksonville State finishing third overall, and first among teams that competed in just the air rifle event.
