Memphis Wins Tiger Open Air Rifle Tournament
Oct. 6, 2010
MEMPHIS, Tenn.--The University of Memphis rifle team claimed victory at its first event of the 2010 season behind Jessica Phenis' aggregate score of 586. Memphis outshout runner-up Jacksonville State by a margin of 2,324 to 2,316 to claim the title at the Tiger Open Air Rifle Tournament for the second consecutive season. UT Martin placed third with a team aggregate score of 2,311. Phenis, who placed third at last year's Tiger Rifle Open with a six-round score of 584, scored a perfect 100 in her second round of shooting en route to claiming the individual title. Two other Tigers joined Phenis in the top five individually. Kelly Audet and Dan Hermsmeier, making his collegiate Rifle debut, both shot aggregate scores of 581 and found themselves in a tie for third position with Jacksonville State's Andrea Dardas. Hermsmeier and Audet would be on the losing end of the three-way tie breaker, with the duo taking fourth and fifth places, respectively. It was Audet's ninth career 580-and-above performance and matched her total from the Tiger Rifle Open last season. Kaitlyn Lee finished with an aggregate score of 576 and an 11th place showing. The junior from Philadelphia, Tenn., scored 98's in two of her last three rounds to recover from a slow start. Greg Morton placed 16th with a total of 568. Linn Larsen (567) and Jimmy Zaken (557) finished 19th and 29th, respectively. Next up for Tiger Rifle is a dual match against the University of Nebraska in Omaha on Oct. 8.
