No. 12 Memphis Rifle Tops No. 5 Army in the Tiger Open

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis rifle team hosted the annual Tiger Open over the weekend and topped No. 5 Army en route to a third place finish. The field included six top 20 teams with the Tigers besting four.
Senior Dan Hermsmeier claimed the individual championship in both air and smallbore, posting a 587-38 in smallbore and a 593-43 in air.
No. 4 TCU won the team competition with an aggregate score of 4652 closely followed by No. 8 Jacksonville State, posting a 4648. The Tigers' third place score of 4629, edged No. 10 Ohio State by just one point and Army by three.
In the smallbore discipline, junior Max Burkhardt also toted a top ten finish, shooting a 579-22 and tying for seventh in the field of 74.
Freshman Amy Fister hit 27 centers and a score of 571, good enough for a 24th place finish. Sophomores Beth Lee and Nate Brandeburg rounded out Memphis' top five, each posting a 565-19.
Following Hermsmeier's lead, Lee earned a top ten spot of her own in the air competition, shooting a 587-37 and a ninth place finish.
Burkhardt (574-28) and junior Maya Arredondo (574-25) posted the Tigers' final two top scores in air to give Memphis and aggregate of 2327.
After their successful opening weekend, the rifle team has a few weeks off before heading to Lexington, KY to take on North Carolina State and the University of Kentucky on October 26 and 27.
