The No. 10 Memphis rifle team went on the road on Monday and Tuesday, traveling to West Point, N.Y. to take on No. 6 Army on Monday and then to Morgantown, W. Va. to take on the top ranked West Virginia Mountaineers on Tuesday. 

Despite shooting season bests on both days, the Tigers fell to both Army and West Virginia.

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The No. 10 Memphis rifle team traveled to West Point on Monday to take on the No. 6 ranked Army Black Knights. The Knights topped the Tigers in the overall team score but Memphis, 4658-4631, but Memphis edged Army in the Air Rifle competition by three points, 2343-2340.

Junior Dan Hermsmeier fell only two points shy of the individual air rifle top honors with a 590, just behind Army's Michael Matthews. Also shooting for a top five spot was sophomore Max Burkhardt who posted a 586 to finish fourth.

With her highest individual finish in her collegiate career thus far, freshman Beth Lee earned sixth place in air with a 584 while senior Kelly Audet finished only one point behind her with a 583.

Freshman Nathan Brandeburg and junior Jimmy Zaken rounded out the Memphis air scores with a 573 and 561 respectively.

In the individual smallbore competition, Hermsmeier tied for third place along with Army's Jacob Costa, both shooting a 579.

Burkhardt and Audet tied for eighth place with a pair of 573's.

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Against the Mountaineers on Tuesday, Memphis set its best aggregate score of the season, posting a 4634 but it wasn't to topple No. 1 WVU's 4717.

The Mountaineers' 4717 sets a new national collegiate high score record.

Hermsmeier led the Tigers in both smallbore and air, recording a 586 in smallbore for fourth place and only three points behind Garrett Spurgeon's winning 589. Hermsmeier went on to shoot a 589 in the air rifle competition and tied for fifth.

Beth Lee put together another stellar performance in the air competition, improving on her collegiate best score of 584 in the Army match and posted a new high of 586 and finished eighth overall.

Max Burkhardt and Kelly Audet rounded out Memphis' top scores in the air competition with Burkhardt posting a 585 and Audet just two points behind with a 583.

Audet and Burkhardt finished back-to-back in the smallbore individual competition as well; this time with Audet leading the way with a 573 and Burkhardt with a 572.

The rifle team takes a two-week break before going back on the road to take on No. 2 TCU on November 3.
