Nov. 27, 2013
JACKSONVILLE, AL - The No. 10 Memphis rifle team competed in the Gamecock Invitational over the weekend where they finished in third behind host and No. 4 Jacksonville State and No. 5 TCU.
JSU claimed the title posting a 4678, TCU was second with 4638 and the Tigers' 4626 was good enough for a third place finish. No. 11 Murray State and No. 12 Ole Miss followed Memphis in fourth and fifth respectively.
For the sixth straight match this season, senior Dan Hermsmeier has finished in the top three in either smallbore or air rifle. Hermsmeier topped the leader board in air rifle, shooting a 593, and tied for sixth in smallbore with a 578. Hermsmeier's combined score of 1,171 was good enough for a second overall finish, just eight points behind JSU's Samantha Bullard.
Freshman Amy Fister put together one of her best performances of the year in smallbore, leading Memphis with 579 and tying for third, edging Hermsmeier by one point.
On the air rifle side, Hermsmeier posted the only top 10 score for the Tigers but Lee was only 9 shots back, posting a 584.
Burkhardt was right behind her shooting a 582 while Fister (574) and sophomore Nathan Brandeburg (568) rounded out Memphis' top five air shooters.
The Tigers take a two month break over the holidays before returning to competition on January 25 when they host defending national champion and No. 3 West Virginia Mountaineers.
