MEMPHIS --The University of Memphis rifle team concluded the fall portion of its scheduled last weekend by finishing third in the Gamecock Invitational and dropping a narrow decision in a dual match with Columbus State. Several Tiger shooters set new personal and season bests during the matches.

The Tigers posted a new season-high aggregate of 4,596 en route to nearly knocking off the Cougars in Ft. Benning, Ga.--the site of this year's NCAA Championships. Memphis turned in a 2,325 mark in air rifle, where it was led by freshman Dan Hermsmeier's new personal best of 582 and Katelynn Lee's season-high 583. Both Hermsmeier and Lee also posted new personal best aggregate totals with marks of 1,159 and 1,147, respectively.

The Tigers shot a 2,271 team total in smallbore, just 14 points shy of Columbus State's mark of 2,285.

Memphis then traveled down the road to Jacksonville, Ala. to compete in the Gamecock Invitational, posting a team aggregate mark of 4,582 and falling to Murray State (4,641) and Jacksonville State (4,623).

The Tigers were led by Hermsmeier and Kelly Audet in smallbore as Hermsmeier turned in a mark of 578 to go along with Audet's personal record performance of 573. Audet also turned in a new personal aggregate total of 1,143.

"I'm proud of the team's performance," Memphis head coach Butch Whoolbright said. "It was a good weekend for us and gives us positive momentum to build on for the spring."

The Tigers posted marks of 2,295 and 2,287 in air rifle and smallbore, respectively. Memphis rifle will return to action Jan. 19 when it travels to Martin, Tenn. for the Skyhawk Invitational.
