John Ross lettered for the Tiger baseball team for three years, 1966 through 1968, under former head coach Al Brown.

He was named the Most Valuable Pitcher in 1966 and in 1968 and is currently ranked seventh for the most strikeouts in a career with 169. Ross' most outstanding game came in 1966 when he pitched a no-hitter against the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. Over his three seasons with the Tigers, Ross compiled an overall record of 17-3.

After receiving his BSE degree from the University in 1969, he began a career in education, which continued for many years. Ross taught at Snowden Junior High and at Melrose High School before moving to Central High School in 1981. He taught American history at Central and coached the men's and women's golf teams and the women's softball team. He was named the Tennessee Class AAA Men's Golf Coach of the Year in 1991.
