MARTIN, Tenn. - Fueled by a six-run explosion in the first inning, the Tigers cruised to a 13-5 victory over intrastate rival Tennessee-Martin at Skyhawk Field this afternoon.

Before the heavily anticipated debut of Northwest tranfser Joel Posey even got underway, the junior right-hander was already staked to a six-run advantage. Senior first baseman Jay Fik started the scoring with a monstrous three-run jack to right, scoring sophomore second baseman Michael Lewis and junior right fielder Paul Cookman.

Sophomore left fielder Josh Payne, freshman shortstop Brent Dlugach and senior centerfielder Paul Reuer all had RBI singles in a first inning that saw 10 Tigers reach base.

Dlugach, who was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in his collegiate debut, was one of three Tigers with three hits. Reuer was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI and sophomore third baseman Kyle Scott was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Payne and Cookman both had two hits as the Tigers tallied 16 hits on the day.

In his Division I debut, Posey allowed three runs (one earned) and fanned five. Because Posey worked only four innings, the win went to senior left-hander Ryan O'Malley. O'Malley allowed only two runs on four hits over four innings. The Springfield, Ill., native tied a career high with seven strikeouts and at one point retired eight-straight Skyhawk batters.

Senior left-hander Gabe Council fired a hitless ninth and had a strikeout in his U of M debut.

The Tigers are back in action this weekend when they compete in the Service Academies Classic at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn.
