Seventh-ranked Arizona State blanked the University of Memphis baseball team 7-0 Saturday in day two of the Rice University Coca-Cola Classic at Reckling Stadium. The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-1 on the season after their season-opening 6-2 win over Cal-State Northridge in day one of the classic Friday.

The Sun Devils improved to 7-2 on the year as a pair of lefthanders kept the Tigers off balance at the plate limiting Memphis to just two hits. Freshman Pat Cassa allowed one of those hits in six innings of work to pick up his first collegiate win and Josh Blake threw three scoreless innings of relief to notch the save.

Cassa surrendered a single to designated hitter Ryan Martin in the fifth while third baseman Bill Moss added a bloop single off Blake in the eighth, but the Tigers could never pose a serious threat.

Cassa retired the Tigers in order through the first four innings while the ASU offense built a 4-0 lead. The Sun Devils plated three runs in the first inning off Memphis starter Derek Hankins on a RBI groundout by Zechry Zinicola and a Colin Curtis two-run homer.

Hankins (0-10 took the loss in his first Division I start allowing four earned runs in 3.2 innings of work. The junior college transfer struck out five and walked three.

The Sun Devils added a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning to increase their lead 6-0. ASU scored its final run in the seventh on a solo home run Joe Persichina. Pre-season All-American Justin Pedroia had three hits including RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings to increase his batting average to .525.

Tiger catcher Kurt Welch was robbed of extra bases in the first inning as ASU rightfielder Travis Buck snagged the blast just at the top of the wall. Memphis closes out its three-game stretch at the classic Sunday with Lamar at 6 p.m. The will be broadcasted live locally on WUMR 91.9.
