MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Junior outfielder Ryan O'Malley hit two consecutive home runs including a three-run shot to left which helped spark the University of Memphis Tiger baseball team (9-4) to a decisive 20-4 victory over the Panthers of Eastern Illnois (2-9), Tuesday afternoon.

The Tigers erupted for seven runs in the first inning (season-high) and six more in the second, to cruise for their ninth win of the year. Memphis's 20 runs were the most scored at home since 1994 when the Tigers blew out the Bearcats of Cincinnati , 25-1.

O'Malley ended up 2-for-2 with two runs scored and five RBI. Junior second baseman Daniel Uggla went 4-for-5 with a triple, double, three runs scored and two RBI.

The Tigers batted around in the bottom of the first and grabbed an early 7-0 lead, highlighted by a three-run homer by O'Malley to deep center.

Memphis's scoring trend continued in the next inning, as the Tigers added six more runs off a grand slam by junior catcher Barrett Smith and a solo shot from O'Malley which bounced on top of the scoreboard in left-center, making the score 13-1 after two.

Memphis went on to score four in the third and three in the fifth, to wrap up the their second-straight win at home.

Redshirt junior Jay Fik (CBHS) had three doubles on the day, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Senior shortstop Gabe Interiano finished 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI.

For the Panthers, Chris Martin was a perfect 3-for-3 including a double and two RBI.

The loss went to Nick Albu, who faced only four batters but gave up four earned runs off two Memphis home runs.

Senior pitcher Jason Wiedmeyer (3-2) earned his third win of 2001, going for five full innings and allowing three unearned runs off 10 hits while striking out four, in the win.
