March 13, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Jacob Wilson delivered a walk-off single and the University of Memphis baseball team defeated Austin Peay 3-2 on Tuesday at FedExPark. The Tigers improve to 6-10 with the win while Austin Peay drops to 9-6.
Memphis did the ninth inning damage with two outs as Adam McClain doubled to the right-centerfield gap to start the rally. A passed ball advanced McClain to third and Zach Willis drew a walk and advanced to second on catcher's indifference. Wilson hit next and laced a single to left-centerfield to drive in the winning run.
Austin Peay scattered three hits in the first, but Tiger starter Michael Wills limited the Govs to one run in the inning. Jon Clinard hit a one-out double to left-center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Greg Bachman drove in Clinard on a RBI single to left to give Austin Peay the 1-0 lead. With two outs in the inning, Jordan Hankins singled to right, but Bachman was tagged out between second and third to end the inning.
Two walks helped Austin Peay extend the lead to 2-0 in the fourth. Reed Harper walked and moved to second on a walk to Hankins. Harper stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by P.J. Torres. Wills forced a ground ball to short and the Tiger defense turned a double play to end the frame.
Memphis threatened to score in the fourth as Willis drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt. The Tigers struggle with runners in scoring position continued as Austin Peay starter Lucas Anderson retired the next three batters he faced via two strikeouts and a pop out.
The Tigers had a runner on second with no outs in the fifth, but the runner was stranded there to end the stanza. McClain led off the sixth with a double and Willis came through with a double down the right field line to plate the Tigers first run of the game. Two-straight groundouts allowed Willis to cross the plate and knot the score at 2-2.
Keaton Aldridge singled with one out in the seventh and McClain was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for the Tigers. Austin Peay stranded the Tiger baserunners there with a fly out and strikeout to send the game to the eighth with the score tied 2-2.
Patrick Bailey pitched four scoreless innings in relief and allowed two hits, walked one and struck out two. Bailey retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced. Austin Peay recorded its first hit off of Bailey with one out in the eighth, but Aldridge caught a fouled off bunt for the second out. Bachman followed with a single up the middle, but Bailey escaped the inning with a ground ball out to second.
Austin Peay threatened in the ninth as Hankins hit a first pitch single up the middle. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and a spectacular grab by Ethan Gross at shortstop kept Gautier to an infield single and Hankins on second. Tiger reliever Jonathan Van Eaton struck out Tyler Childress and a fly out by pinch-hitter Matt Wollenzin ended the frame.
McClain and T.J. Rich paced the Tiger offense with two hits each. Austin Peay out-hit the Tigers 10-8 on the game and Memphis earned their first win on the year when being out-hit. Van Eaton picked up the win on the mound to improve to 2-1 on the season and Chuck Edlin was tagged with the loss.
The Tigers continue the eight-game homestand with a three-game series with Siena. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday at FedExPark.
