CHARLOTTE - The University of Memphis Tiger baseball team (11-6, 1-2) lost the third game of their conference opening series against the 49ers of Charlotte (9-10, 2-1) on Sunday afternoon, 6-5. Memphis won the first game of the series 12-8 in the first game of a double-header.

Daniel Uggla went 2-for-3 with a two singles a run scored and one RBI. Layne Dawson (1-1, 0-1) threw two innings of relief and gave up one earned run off two 49er hits while walking one and fanning four, in his first loss of the season.

The Tigers went ahead early 2-0 when Barrett Smith hit a single through the middle of the infield, which scored Michael Lewis (Germantown HS) and Uggla. Lewis then slapped a two-run double to left-center in the top of the second, scoring Josh Payne (Houston HS) and Kyle Scott (Germantown HS) giving Memphis a 4-0 advantage.

After going scoreless for the first three innings, the 49ers tied the game at four with two runs in the fourth and two more in the bottom of the fifth which also included a solo shot from Thomas Bowker to leftfield. Bowker came through again during the bottom of the sixth, hitting a sacrifice-fly to deep left which scored Nick Blackmon and broke the tie to give Charlotte their first lead of the game.

With two outs in the seventh, Uggla slammed a 3-2 pitch through the left-side which brought Ryan O'Malley in from third to tie the game at five. The very next inning, Blackmon broke the tie open in the eighth with a solo home run over the wall in left which gave the 49ers 6-5 lead.

Picking up the win for Charlotte was Jacob Chaney (2-0) who went for two-and-a-third innings and only gave up one hit while striking out three.

 

 

Memphis will now tangle with SEC foe Ole Miss on Wednesday, March 21st at 7 p.m. The game will take place in downtown Memphis at AutoZone Park, home of the AAA Memphis Redbirds.
