Tigers Run Bulls, 6-3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis baseball won its second-straight Conference USA matchup with South Florida Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park. With the win the Tigers improve to 5-12 overall and - more importantly - 2-4 in C-USA play.
Memphis jumped out to a 1-0 lead when junior centerfielder Paul Cookman worked a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrafice bunt by freshman shortstop Brent Dlugach, and scored on a single by senior catcher Barrett Smith.
South Florida evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the third, but the Tigers notched a three-spot in the bottom half on a two RBI double by junior first baseman Andy Gesell, who later scored on a single by sophomore Josh Payne. Payne finished the day 2-for-4 and extended his team-leading hitting streak to nine games.
Freshman right-hander Michael Novarese allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out four over 7.0 innings for his first collegiate victory.
Payne, Cookman, Dlugach, Martin and senior catcher Barrett Smith all had two hits to pace the Tiger offense.
Memphis is back in action when it head to Stillwater, Okla., to take on Oklahoma State Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
