March 27, 2002
Stillwater, OK - Despite trailing only 4-3 after the middle of the fifth, the Memphis Tigers lost another tough contest to No. 21 Oklahoma State Wednesday afternoon, this time by a count of 9-3.
Memphis has now dropped two straight and fell to 5-14 overall while OSU improved to 17-7 on the year.
Freshman shortstop Brent Dlugach (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) got the U of M their first lead of the series 1-0 in the top of the first, after taking a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left for his fourth home run of the season. OSU then quickly countered with three runs during the next two frames and went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the second.
Senior designated hitter Barrett Smith's (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) sacrifice-fly to centerfield scored junior outfielder Paul Cookman from third which narrowed the gap 3-2 in the top half of the third inning. Smith would later hit his first home run of the season in the top of the fifth, but a Cowboy run in the fourth and a three-run bomb by shortstop Rob Watson in the fifth put OSU up for good, 7-3.
Freshman second baseman Kyle Sledd (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) led all Tiger hitters after going 2-for-4 at the plate, while Dlugach left his mark with two hits including a solo homer and an RBI and Smith followed suit with a homer and RBI, as well.
Freshman leftfielder Ryan Martin (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) and junior first baseman Andy Gesell each extended their hitting streaks to six games a-piece while senior starter Nick Steht absorbed the loss and fell to 0-2 this season. Deemed a staff day before the start of the contest, Memphis went through five pitchers and each surrended at least one run.
Memphis will now travel to Cincinnati, OH for a three-game C-USA series with the host Bearcats. Friday's game will begin at 2 p.m. CST.
