Tigers Rally in Ninth but Middle Tennessee Walks-Off With 8-7 Win
March 27, 2012
Jacob Wilson hit a game-tying three-run home run with two outs in the ninth, but Middle Tennessee (15-10) hit a walk-off double to give the Blue Raiders an 8-7 win over Memphis (10-14) on Tuesday at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
A two-out walk to Ryan Ford put the game-winning run on and Justin Guidry hit the walk-off double to deep right-centerfield to score the game-winning run from first. Memphis' throw to the plate was a step late as Ford slide in for the score.
Down to the last strike with two outs in the top of the ninth, Jacob Wilson blasted a three-run homer to left field to tie the game at 7-7. Zach Willis worked a two-out walk and Eli Hynes followed with a single up the middle to bring Wilson, the tying run, to the plate. Wilson ripped the 2-2 pitch deep to left field to knot the score.
Memphis collected three hits in the first inning, but failed to scratch across a first inning tally. Ethan Gross singled through the right side but was doubled up on a lineout to second base. Three-straight hits by the middle of the Tigers order loaded the bases with two out, but a groundout ended the frame and stranded the bases loaded.
Middle Tennessee jumped on the board quickly as a three-run home run gave the Blue Raiders a 3-0 lead. A leadoff walk followed by a one out double down the left field line put two runners in scoring position. Trent Miller hit next and belted a three-run homer to left field, the first home run allowed by a Tiger starter since March 4th at UL-Monroe.
The Tigers recorded three hits in the third and tied the score at 3-3. Willis singled up the middle and Wilson worked a walk to put two runners on with two out. T.J. Rich ripped a double to deep centerfield to plate two runs and Carter White singled through the right side to drive in Rich and tie the score at 3-3.
The Blue Raiders used a RBI double by Ryan Stephens to regain the lead at 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth, but Memphis answered with a run in the fifth. Willis was issued a leadoff walk and advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Eli Hynes brought in the run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to cut the Blue Raider lead to 5-4.
Two triples brought in two runs for Middle Tennessee in the fifth as the Blue Raiders extended the lead to 7-4. Justin Guidry started the frame with a triple to right-centerfield and scored on a groundout by Hank LaRue. Trent Miller followed with a triple to left-centerfield and he scored on a wild pitch.
Rich hit a leadoff double in the eighth, but the Tigers couldn't produce a timely hit to drive him in. Middle Tennessee relief pitcher Nick Montgomery forced a fly out for the first out and a groundout moved Rich to third. Montgomery got out of the inning with a lineout to short and Middle Tennessee maintained the 7-4 advantage.
Wilson, Hynes and Rich paced the Tiger offense with two hits on the game and Memphis out-hit the Blue Raiders 11-9. Patrick Bailey (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing one run on one hit in the ninth. Joey McClung (3-0) picked up the win in one-third inning of work.
Memphis will attempt to even the midweek series with Middle Tennessee as the two teams meet on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
