April 3, 2002
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Freshman right-hander Daniel de Armas scattered two hits over 7.1 innings in a 2-0 Tiger win over Middle Tennessee State at Reese Smith Field in Murfreesboro, Tenn., this afternoon.
de Armas carried a perfect game into the bottom of the sixth, when he gave up a one-out single to Blue Raider second baseman Chad Cooper. Cooper was one of only three Middle Tennessee players to reach base, as junior Josh Cartwright and Josh Payne combined with de Armas for the first Tiger shutout in 114 games. The last time Memphis blanked an opponent was in a 6-0 victory over Western Illinois 14 games into the 2000 season.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the top of the first on an RBI single from senior catcher Barrett Smith. Freshman shortstop Brent Dlugach stretched the count to 2-0 with a solo home run in the top of the sixth.
Payne finished the 2-for-5 and fired a perfect ninth inning for his second save of the season and junior first baseman Andy Gesell stroked a single in his last at-bat to extend his team-leading hitting streak to 10 games.
After starting the season 3-12, the Tigers have won five straight and have won seven of their last nine games.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday when they host Tulane at Nat Buring Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m.
