Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Memphis baseball won its first C-USA series of the season by splitting a doubleheader with TCU Saturday at Nat Buring Stadium. The Horned Frogs (20-15, 7-5 C-USA) shutout the Tigers 8-0 in game one, but Memphis (10-20, 3-9, C-USA) rallied to win game two with a three-run seventh inning to capture the series with a 5-4 victory.

"I was really pleased with the way we battled back after dropping the first game," Memphis head coach Dave Anderson said. "Jarrett (Grube) gave us a chance to get back in it (in game two) on the mound. The offense came up with some big hits and our defense made some big plays as well. The effort in game two showed us we can comeback and that is important for a young team. "

In game one, TCU started Clayton Jerome and reliever Patrick Newburn combined to shutout the Tigers 8-0 as the Horned Frogs evened the series at one game a piece. Jerome (6-1) struck out a season-high 12 Tigers and allowed just four hits in eight innings of work. Newburn allowed two base runners in the ninth, but kept the Tigers off the scoreboard. Rightfielder Jake Duncan led the Horned Frogs' 11-hit effort with a 3-for-5 effort. First baseman Jared Lundeen went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

TCU scored a trio of runs in the top half on just one hit and a pair of Tiger fielding errors. Lundeen drove in two runs with a double of the leftfield. Lundeen scored on the play when Ryan Martin's throw from left got away from the Tiger infield and rolled all the way to the catcher's backstop.

The Horned Frogs added a pair of runs in the sixth inning aided again by a Memphis fielding error. Lundeen, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Hatcher. The TCU catcher then scored on a RBI single by Will Lewis.

The sixth inning was the final one for Tiger starter Brandon Rowan (1-1) who allowed five runs, two of which were earned and struck out four in just his second start of the season.

Memphis reliever Erik Filsinger allowed three runs in his two innings of work as TCU third baseman Mike Settle hit a solo home run in the seventh. Settle extended his hitting streak to a season-long nine games with his third home run of the season. TCU added two more runs off Filsinger in the eighth on a passed ball by catcher Kelly Edmundson and a RBI single by Terry Trofholz.

In game two, the Tigers rallied for a 5-4 win with a three-run seventh inning that was sparked by a two-run triple by Kevin House. Righthander Jarrett Grube (1-3) kept the Tigers in the ball game as he kept TCU off the scoreboard after the third inning as the Horned Frogs raced out to a 4-0 lead. Memphis leadoff hitter Chad House went 3-for-3 and reached base safely in all four of his at-bats.

The Horned Frogs once again built an early advantage with a three-run second inning off Memphis starter Bill Edwards. Grube relieved Edwards after he allowed three runs on five hits in an 1.1 innings of work. TCU got four hits and a walk off Edwards in the second to plate their trio of runs.

TCU added an unearned run off Grube in the third when Duncan reached on a fielder's choice and worked his away around the bases before scoring on a wild pitch. Settle extended his season-long hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff single.

Memphis tallied a run in the third when Chad House scored on a fielding error by Settle at third base for TCU. Welch hit a sharp groundball that got by Settle allowing House to score from third. Lewis moved House to second with a single.

The home team cut the lead to 4-2 as House scored his second run of the game in the fifth on a RBI single by Michael Lewis. House hit a one-out double and moved to third ona wild pitch by Shoemaker. Memphis had another chance to score in the sixth with runners at second and third, however first baseman Kyle Scott was thrown out at the plate after he tried to score on an errant pitch by reliever Zach Duncan.

The Tigers took their first lead of the game plating three runs in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead off TCU reliever Zach Duncan (1-4). Bill Moss drew a walk and moved to second on an infield single by Chad House. Both runners then scored on a two-RBI triple by Kevin House and he came around to score on the play after the throw to get him out at third hopped past Settle into the TCU dugout.

TCU got three hits off Grube in the eighth, but the potential-tying run was thrown out at the plate by Tiger rightfielder Jordan Hart. Grube was able to strikeout Chris Neuman to end the threat and preserve the one-run lead.

In the ninth, Grube got leftfielder Chris Meeks to ground into a comebacker to end the contest after Trofholz hit a two-out double to put the tying run in scoring position for the Horned Frogs.
