Memphis Falls at Tennessee 6-3
April 4, 2012
After the Tigers stranded runners on the corners in the top of the second, Tennessee scored four runs on five hits to take a 4-0 lead. Chris Fritts reached on an infield single and Chris Pierce followed with a triple to put the Vols on the board. Two doubles and a single drove in three more runs for Tennessee as the Vols had three extra-base hits in the frame.
Memphis scratched across a run in the third to cut the lead to 4-1, but stranded runners on the corners for the second-consecutive inning. Keaton Aldridge sparked the inning with a leadoff single and he moved to second on a groundout. A walk and hit batter loaded the bases for Eli Hynes and Hynes provided his 29th RBI on the season with a sacrifice fly to center. Memphis left runners on the corners as a fly out ended the stanza.
Following a one hour, 12 minute weather delay, Ethan Gross laced a single up the middle to move Aldridge, who walked before the delay, to second. A walk loaded the bases and Adam McClain was hit by a pitch to plate Memphis' second run of the day. Tennessee escaped the jam with a strikeout and double play to maintain the 4-2 lead. With two outs in the sixth, Tennessee put runners on second and third, but Tiger reliever pitcher Erik Schoenrock forced a comebacker to get out of the jam. A two-out walk followed by a single put runners on first and second and a wild pitch moved each runner to scoring position.
Memphis continued to chip away at the lead as an RBI groundout by Aldridge plated the Tigers third run of the night. T.J. Rich started the frame with a single through the right side and Carter White followed with a single to center. Tennessee nearly turned a double play, but Derrick Thomas beat the throw to first to reach on the fielder's choice. Thomas later stole second and the RBI groundout by Aldridge plated Rich.
Tennessee responded with one run in the seventh, but left the bases loaded to end the inning. Davis Morgan hit a one-out single, moved to second on a balk and score on a RBI double by pinch-hitter Jake Rowland. Two hit batters loaded the bases for the Vols, but reliever Dylan Toscano forced a fly out to end the inning. The Vols closed the scoring in the eighth as Will Maddox singled, advanced to second on ground and two wild pitches allowed him to score.
Memphis starter Michael Wills (1-1) was saddled with the loss as he allowed four runs on six hits in three innings of work. Dalton Saberhagen (3-0) picked up the win as he allowed just one run on two hits in 1.2 innings on the mound. Nick Blount recorded his seventh save of the season as he retired Memphis in order in the ninth. Rich led the Memphis offense with three hits, but Tennessee out-hit the Tigers 10-8.
Memphis continues the five-game road trip with a three-game Conference USA series at Marshall (11-16, 1-2). The series starts on Friday at 6:05 p.m. (CT) in Charleston, W.Va. and game two is at 6:05 p.m. (CT) on Saturday. Sunday's series finale is slated for 12:00 p.m. (CT).
