April 9, 2002
OXFORD, Miss. - Tiger baseball fell to Ole Miss, 7-1, at Swayze Field in Oxford, Miss., this evening.
Senior right-hander Nick Steht battled the Rebels to preserve a 1-1 tie through four innings before being credited with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Danville, Ill., native worked with runners in scoring position every inning and was pulled for reliever Nick Rogers with runners on first and third in the home half of the fifth. Steht scattered seven hits and stuck out two over 4.0 innings for the loss.
The Rebels added three more in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-1 lead and the Ole Miss pitching staff retired 11-consecutive Tigers to seal the win.
Memphis' lone run came in the top of the first when freshman shortstop Brent Dlugach doubled to score junior right fielder Paul Cookman, who started the rally with a lead-off drag bunt. Dlugach, Cookman and junior first baseman Andy Gesell had two hits apiece for the Tigers.
Memphis is back in action tomorrow when it hosts Austin Peay State at Nat Buring Stadium at 7 p.m.
