Baseball Drops Game Two At Houston, 15-3
April 13, 2002
HOUSTON, Texas - Memphis dropped its second-straight Conference USA decision to Houston, 15-3 at Cougar Field in Houston, Texas, Saturday night.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by senior catcher Barrett Smith in the top of the first, the Tigers surrendered four runs in the bottom half of the opening frame. The Cougars added another run in the second and four in the third before Memphis plated two in the top of the fourth when sophomore left fielder Josh Payne doubled-in junior first baseman Andy Gesell, while Smith later scored on a wild pitch.
At 9-3, the Tigers were as close as they would come all night as the Cougars tacked-on one run in the bottom of the sixth, another in the seventh, and four in the eighth for the 15-3 final.
Houston pitchers combined to strike out 19 Memphis hitters, which ties the C-USA record for strikeouts in a game, a record the Cougars set against Memphis just last night.
Senior right-hander Nick Steht allowed four runs (one earned) and struck out three in 4.0 innings of relief.
Payne, Smith and freshman shortstop Brent Dlugach each had two hits to pace the Tiger offense.
Memphis is back in action tomorrow in the final game of a three-game C-USA set with Houston at Cougar Field at 1 p.m.
