Schoenrock Tosses Third Complete Game as @UofMBaseball Clinches Series at UAB
April 13, 2013
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Erik Schoenrock's complete-game effort and hits from all nine batters in the lineup clinched a series win at UAB (15-20, 2-6 C-USA) as Memphis (22-13, 7-4 C-USA) won its eighth-straight game in game one of a doubleheader at Young Memorial Field Saturday with a 7-1 decision.
Four Tigers reached base in the first inning, but a leadoff strike out and two fielder's choices kept the Tigers scoreless in the first. UAB's leadoff man Ryan Prinzing led off the inning with an infield single and after two groundouts, one a sacrifice bunt, he stood on third with two outs. Memphis got out of the inning with a fly ball to right field, ending a scoreless first inning.
Bryce Beeler hit a one-out triple to center to put the go-ahead run 90 feet away. After a groundout to third didn't allow the run to score, Zach Willis hit a grounder to second, but the throw to first was errant allowing Beeler to score.
After Schoenrock retired 12-straight, Tanner Bryant hit a leadoff double down the leftfield line to get UAB a chance to score. Schoenrock forced the next batter to pop up the bunt attempt leaving Bryant at second. Following a ground out to first, Bryant stood 90 feet away, but Schoenrock got the strikeout to end the inning.
Memphis plated four runs with two outs in the sixth to open a 5-0 lead. An infield single by Carter White got the Tigers going and White moved to second on a groundout. With two outs in the inning, UAB elected to intentionally walk Colton Simbeck to put two on with two out. Drew Griffin made the Blazers pay for that decision as he laced a single to right field to make it 2-0. Beeler was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Jake Little. Little drilled an 0-2 pitch through the right side allowing two more runs to score. With runners on the corners, Memphis went for the double steal with Little taking off for second. After the throw to second, Beeler scampered home and beat the tag scoring the Tigers fifth tally, fourth in the inning.
UAB crossed one run in the seventh, but Schoenrock limited the damage, stranding runners on first and second to end the inning. A one-out single by Ivan De Jesus opened the door for the Blazers, but Schoenrock came back to strikeout the next UAB hitter. De Jesus stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch that was ball four to Tyler Mims. Harry Clark blooped a single to left field to get the Blazers in the score column.
Memphis added a pair of runs in the ninth to set the final score of 7-1. Willis was hit by a pitch to start the frame and an error allowed Gross to reach. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runners and Tucker Tubbs followed a Tucker Tubbs with a RBI single to make it 6-1. Keaton Aldridge added the seventh tally with a RBI single of his own. With the complete-game effort, Schoenrock has three on the season. He allowed five hits over nine innings while walking one and striking out six. All nine starters collected hits for the Tigers in the game as the U of M out-hit UAB 9-5.
The two teams play game two of the doubleheader at 5 p.m.
