Memphis, Tenn. - Murray State earned a split of a home-and-home series with the University of Memphis baseball team as the Thoroughbreds defeated theTigers 9-3 Tuesday at Reagan Field. Thoroughbred starter Craig Kraus did not allow an earned run in six innings of work as Murray State (13-16) pounded out 13 hits while the Tigers (12-24) could muster just eight hits off four Murray pitchers. Memphis won a 14-12 contest at Nat Buring Stadium on March 11th.

The Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after second baseman Michael Lewis stole home, but that would be the only lead of the game for the Tigers. Lewis singled in the inning and scored on a double steal after Ryan Martin got caught in a run down between first and second allowing Lewis to cross home before he was tagged out.

Murray State tied the game with an unearned run in its half of the first. Leadoff hitter Garner Byars scored after walking, stealing second, moving to third on an error and scoring on a wild pitch. Memphis starter Bill Edwards struck out the side despite allowing the run.

The Thoroughbreds took a 4-1 lead with a three-run third inning off Edwards. First baseman Brett McCutchan, who went 5-for-5 with seven RBI in the first meeting with the Tigers this season, plated two runs with a double to the right-centerfield gap. Designated hitter Matt Rebout added a RBI single in the frame.

Edwards was replaced by sophomore Daniel de Armas to start the fourth and shortstop Alex Stewart promptly led off the inning with a solo home run to give the 'Breds a 5-1 lead. Murray State added one more run in the frame on a two-out RBI single by Byars.

Memphis chipped away at the Murray State lead adding a run in the sixth on a RBI single by Kurt Welch. Shortstop Brent Dlugach added a single that moved Welch to third, but the sophomore was thrown out at second after the throw from Byars in centerfield was cut off by McCutchan and his throw was in time to retire Dlugach.

The Tigers rallied for one more run in the seventh to get within three of the 'Breds at 6-3. Kevin House led off the frame with an infield single. House moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI double by Bill Moss. Moss and Dlugach each had a pair of hits for the Tigers.

Murray State built its lead back to five taking an 8-3 advantage after a two-run double by Rebout. Ike Bridwell and McCutchan each singled in the inning off Memphis reliever Michael Novarese and scored on Rebouts' sixth double of the season.

The 'Breds tacked on an insurance run in their half of the eighth to extend the lead to 9-3. Kraus earned his first win of the season after allowing just six hits and two runs while Edwards (3-5) took the loss allowing four runs, three of which were earned and four hits in three innings of work.

Memphis returns to action this weekend when they will host No. 22 Southern Miss in a Conference-USA series at Nat Buring Stadium. Game times are set for 7 p.m., Friday; 2 p.m., Saturday; and 1 p.m., Sunday.
