Hattiesburg, Miss. - No. 12 Southern Miss defeated Memphis 6-2 in Conference USA baseball action Friday at Pete Taylor Park. The Golden Eagles got 11 hits in the game including a pair from catcher Brad Wilcutt who put USM (28-7, 11-2 C-USA) on the board in the second with a leadoff solo home run.
Memphis (17-13, 6-7 C-USA) loaded the bases in the first on three consecutive singles but failed to get a run across as Southern Miss starter Cliff Russum got out of the jam inducing catcher Kurt Welch to ground into an inning-ending double play.
USM got a run in the second when Wilcutt hit his fourth home run of the season to center off Memphis starter Jarrett Grube. Memphis third baseman Bill Moss matched Wilcutt's homer to center with one of his own in the top of the third. It was the first home run of the season for Moss.
The Golden Eagles took the lead back in the fourth on a RBI-single by Blount. Carlos Velazquez scored after reaching base on an infield single. They extended their lead to 4-1 in the fifth with a pair of runs. Matt Shepherd scored on a RBI-groundout by Marc Maddox after tripling to lead off the frame and Wilcutt added a two-out bloop single to drive in his second run of the game.
The Tigers cut the lead to two with a run in the sixth on a RBI-groundout by Adam Amar. Dlugach scored on the play after lacing his 10th double of the season to right field. Dlugach extended his hitting streak to 12 games with his 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
USM added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to claim a 6-2 lead. Golden Eagle reliever Adam Smith pitched out of a jam in the eighth after the first two Tigers reached base off Russum.
Golden Eagle closer Austin Tubb pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the win for USM. Russum (6-1) picked up the win allowing two runs on eight hits in seven-plus innings of work.
Grube (6-2) picked up just his second loss of the season allowing four earned runs in 6.2 innings of work. The senior struck out six to increase his season total to 63. The Tigers left eight runners on base including four in the first two innings combined.
Dlugach, Moss and leftfielder Chad House each had two hits a piece for the Tigers. Welch had his seven-game hitting streak snapped, but added a sacrifice bunt.
