April 17, 2011
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Clayton Gant pitched seven innings and allowed one run to help the University of Memphis baseball team to a series sweep of UAB with a 6-1 victory on Sunday at Young Memorial Field.
The Tigers scored one run in the first and second innings and a three-run third helped the Tigers to the victory. Memphis improves to 22-14 on the season and 6-3 in league play. UAB drops to 20-16 on the season and 6-6 in league play.
Five of the first six batters reached base for the Tigers in the first inning, but the U of M offense could only put one run on the board. Drew Martinez led off the first with a single to left, but was erased on a fielder's choice by Chad Zurcher. Prior to a walk by Jacob Wilson, Zurcher was caught stealing for the second out, but T.J. Rich was hit by a pitch to place runners on first and Phillip Chapman at the plate. Chapman would hit a RBI-single that fell in centerfield and gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Memphis would add a run in the second inning with a sac fly by Martinez. Tiger designated hitter J.D. Wallace scored on the play after leading off the inning with a double. A leadoff double in the third helped Memphis to a three-run inning as Wilson scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Adam McClain. The Tigers would add two more runs on the heels of two Blazer errors to increase the lead to 5-0.
UAB would get on the board in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly by Ryan Nance. The Blazers had a runner in scoring position with one out, but Gant induced a double play to end the fourth inning.
Robby Graham homered in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 6-1. Graham posted his second home run of the season and just the fifth home run by a leadoff man this season.
Gant allowed five hits and one run in seven innings and earned his four victory of the season. Sam Moll pitched the eighth and ninth for the Tigers and allowed two hits and struck out one. Moll recorded the strikeout with a runner on third and two outs to keep the score at 6-1.
Graham led the Memphis offense with three hits and Wallace and Gross had two hits each. The Tigers earned a series sweep in league play for the first time since the 2008 season and that series came against UAB. Memphis' last sweep on the road in league play came at UAB in the 2007 season.
The Tigers return to FedExPark for a five-game homestand that begins with a two-game midweek series against Middle Tennessee. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at FedExPark on Tuesday.
