Jacob Wilson Collects Five RBI In Tigers 10-4 Win at Murray State
April 18, 2012
MURRAY, Ky. - Jacob Wilson hit two of the Tigers four home runs and Memphis (17-20) cruised to a 10-4 victory over Murray State (18-20) at Reagan Field on Wednesday.
Memphis gained an early 2-0 lead in the game with a two-out two-run home run by Jacob Wilson. For the Tigers, it was the 56th and 57th two-out RBI on the season, an area the U of M has struggled in this season. Ford Wilson walked, but was erased on a fielder's choice groundout to shortstop by Adam McClain. Jacob Wilson then hit the two-run shot down the right field line for his eighth home run on the year.
Murray State chipped away at the lead with an RBI single by Dylan Wheeler. Jacob Rhodes started the second inning with a leadoff double for the `Breds. A sac bunt moved Rhodes to third and Wheeler drove him in with the single to left field. Two singles, one via a bunt, had two runners on for Murray State in the third and an error with two outs in the inning allowed the tying run to score.
The Tigers regained the lead in the fourth with the help of a Murray State error. After a single and walk put two on with one out, T.J. Rich grounded to first, but the throw to second was wide allowing the go-ahead run to score. A double steal moved two runners to scoring position and Tucker Tubbs delivered a sac fly to give Memphis a 4-2 lead.
Jacob Wilson blasted his second two-run home run of the day in the sixth inning to put the Tigers up 6-2. Ford Wilson singled with one out, but was erased on a fielder's choice. With McClain on first, Jacob Wilson turned on a 2-1 pitch and sent it over the fence in left-centerfield for his ninth homer and 40th RBI on the year. Eli Hynes followed with a solo homer, marking the second time this season Memphis hit back-to-back home runs.
Derrick Thomas gave Memphis an 8-2 lead in the eighth with a solo homer down the left field line. Thomas' blast was the fourth of the day for the Tigers and the first time since April 10, 2010 that Memphis had four homers in a game. Murray State hit two solo homers in the eight to cut the Tigers lead to 8-4.
The Tigers tacked on two runs in the ninth to set the final score at 10-4. McClain ripped an RBI single up the middle and Jacob Wilson collected his fifth RBI of the game with a sac fly.
Michael Wills (2-1) pitched seven solid innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits. He struck out seven, one shy of his career high. Kyle Cornett (3-2) allowed seven runs, five earned, in 4.1 innings to take the loss for Murray State. Jonathan Van Eaton picked up his fourth save of the season as he forced a double play with two on and one out in the eighth and pitched the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run.
The Tigers travel to Southern Miss for a three-game series that begins Friday at Pete Taylor Park. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
