MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior lefthander Ryan O'Malley scattered two hits and struck out five over 6.0 scoreless innings to guide Memphis to an 8-5 victory over Arkansas State at Nat Buring Stadium Tuesday night.

O'Malley was perfect through the first three innings, before surrendering a leadoff walk in the top of the first. The Springfield, Ill., native gave up a controversial infield single in the same frame before surrendering a single to right field in the fifth.

The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Memphis hitters pounded five hits, highlighted by a two RBI double by junior first baseman Andy Gesell. Freshman shortstop Brent Dlugach and senior catcher Barrett Smith drove in the other Tiger runs in the four-run first.

Memphis went on to open a 7-0 lead in the second inning on RBI doubles by freshman second baseman Chris Godwin and sophomore left fielder Josh Payne as well as a run-scoring single by Smith.

Junior right fielder Paul Cookman was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base, junior third baseman Kyle Sledd was 3-for-4 with a double and a triple and Dlugach was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored to pace the Tiger offense as every Tiger batter had at least one hit.

The Tiger defense did not commit an error for the first time since a 2-0 win over Middle Tennessee State on April 3.

The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow when they head to Austin Peay State in Clarksville, Tenn., to take on the Governors at 6:30 p.m.
