April 24, 2011
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Jacob Wilson hit two, three-run home runs to help the University of Memphis avert a three-game sweep by UCF with a 12-7 victory on Sunday at FedExPark.
After the Knights mounted a 6-3 in the seventh, the Tigers posted a four-run outburst to take a 7-6 lead. Back-to-back singles by Zach Willis and Drew Martinez allowed Chad Zurcher to drive in a run with a single through the left side. With two runners on, Wilson blasted a three-run home run to left field to catapult Memphis to the lead.
Wilson hammered a second, three-run homer in the eighth inning to increase the Tigers lead to 10-6. T.J. Rich followed with a single and scored on a RBI-double by Phillip Chapman. The U of M added another run after a fielding error allowed Chapman to score from second and the Tigers grabbed a 12-6 lead heading to the ninth inning.
UCF used back-to-back hits in the ninth to mount a rally and Beau Taylor drove in a run with a fielder’s choice to cut the Tiger lead to 12-7. Reliever Sam Moll would get out of the inning with a groundout and a fly out and the Tigers avoided the sweep.
Moll (3-1) earned his third victory of the season, throwing 3 2/3 innings in relief of starter Clayton Gant. Moll allowed two runs on four hits and he struck out one batter. Gant tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs, four earned on six hits.
After UCF took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by D.J. Hicks, Memphis knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI groundout by Rich. Zurcher walked and Wilson moved him to third with a double to left field. Rich grounded out to short, but Zurcher was able to score on the play to tie the game.
The Knights regained the lead in the third off an RBI double by Taylor. Taylor later scored on a passed ball to give UCF a 3-1 lead. Memphis scratched across a run in the bottom of the frame with an RBI groundout by Rich. The Tigers loaded the bases later in the inning, but could not drive in an additional run.
Rich collected his third RBI of the day in the bottom of the fifth with a single through the left side of the infield to equalize the score at 3-3. Zurcher scored on the play after hitting a one-out double down the left field line.
After retiring eight-straight batters, Gant surrendered a one-out single by Hicks. Jonathan Griffin followed with a two-run home run to left field. Back-to-back singles placed runners on first and third with one out for the Knights, but Sam Moll induced a double play to get out of the inning with a ground ball to first base.
Wilson and Zurcher led the Tiger offense with three hits each and the duo of Martinez and Rich chipped in with two hits apiece. Wilson finished with six RBI on the game and Zurcher scored four runs for the U of M.
The Tigers hit the road for a regional matchup with Austin Peay on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Raymond C. Hand Park in Clarksville, Tenn.
