C. Wallingford

TAMPA - Three unearned runs against Caleb Wallingford in the sixth inning were all USF needed in a 3-1 win over Memphis on Friday at USF Baseball Stadium.

Darien Tubbs set the table for the Tigers (22-21, 4-9 American) in the sixth with a leadoff single up the middle. After the Tigers flirted with using a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner, Zach Willis doubled to left-centerfield to drive in Tubbs for the Tigers 1-0 lead. Willis moved to third on a wild pitch, but the Tigers couldn't get him in.

The Bulls (23-18, 9-7 American) answered with a leadoff single of their own to start a big three-run inning. An error at second helped the Bulls avoid a double-play and extended the inning for the home side. A fielder's choice on the bunt back to the mound couldn't get the out at third allowing the Bulls to load the bases with no outs. Wallingford forced a groundout and the Tigers got the first out at the plate, but a foul-out to first allowed the tying run to score. A two-out, two-run single made it 3-1 as USF scored three unearned runs on three hits in the sixth.

Memphis used back-to-back singles in the eighth to attempt to rally. A sacrifice bunt attempt was foiled as the Bulls got the force out at third. USF escaped the trouble by ending the frame with Tigers stranded at first and second.

Wallingford (5-3) continued his chase of the single-season ERA record as he lowered his ERA to 1.02. Wallingford allowed three runs, all unearned, on three hits in seven innings pitched for his eighth quality start in 10 starts.

Memphis out-hit the Bulls 7-4 with Willis leading the way with two hits. Zach Schritenthal extended his hit streak to six games and Kane Barrow had a hit to extend his on-base streak to 16 games. Jimmy Herget (6-5) tossed the second-straight complete game effort against the Tigers as he allowed one run on seven hits while striking out seven.

Memphis and USF play game two of the series on Saturday at 5 p.m. (CT) at USF Baseball Stadium.
