May 3, 2014
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Behind a complete game effort by Jon Reed, Memphis evened the three-game series with UConn following a 6-1 win on Saturday at FedExPark.
Reed (6-2) allowed one run on six hits and struck out five for the first complete game since May 11 of last season. The Huskies (22-24, 6-10 American) scored their lone run in the seventh inning. A leadoff double and two groundouts brought in the run, but Memphis answered in the bottom of the inning to take the impressive 6-1 victory.
The Tigers (25-23, 6-11 American) answered in a big way, scoring four runs on four hits and three Huskies errors to lead 6-1 after seven innings. Back-to-back singles by Schritenthal and Darien Tubbs got the inning off to a good start. Zach Willis laid down a bunt single and the throw to first allowed one run to score and a second error on the play plated Darien Tubbs. Jake Little picked up career hit 100 with a RBI double to score Willis and the Tigers led 5-1. Little stole third and scored as the throw to third got away for the third error in the inning.
Memphis grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first off a sacrifice fly by Carter White. Willis hit a one-out single and a Kane Barrow single advanced Willis to scoring position. Little was hit by a pitch to load the bases and White's sacrifice fly gave the Tigers the lead.
A sacrifice fly in the third brought home the second tally for the Tigers. Darien Tubbs set the table with a leadoff single and the speedy freshman stole second to stand in scoring position with no outs. A groundout advanced Tubbs to third and Barrow lifted a fly ball to centerfield to bring home the second run.
Memphis looks for their first series win in league play when the series finale gets underway on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
