MEMPHIS, Tenn. - UConn jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and scored 10 runs in the next two frames to run past Memphis 13-2 on Sunday at FedExPark.
Three hits and two hit batters led to UConn (23-24, 7-10 American) grabbing a 3-0 lead in the first. Two runs scored on a two-out single and the second two-out single of the inning made it 3-0. The Huskies tacked on four runs in the second to expand the lead to 7-0. After a strikeout to the leadoff man, UConn used two walks and a single to load the bases. A double cleared the bases and the second double of the inning added the fourth run of the inning.
After the Tigers (25-24, 6-12 American) got on the board via a RBI groundout by Zach Schritenthal, UConn scored six runs in the third to lead 13-1. The Huskies scored the six runs on four hits and four walks. Two runs scored on bases loaded walks while two, two-run singles brought in the other four runs.
After K.C. Abney and Trevor Sutton each posted scoreless innings in relief, the Tigers were able to get one run back. A single, fielder's choice and walk loaded the bases with no outs and Nate Rupiper picked up an RBI by reaching on a fielder's choice. The Tigers were unable to add more, stranding two runners to end the inning.
Memphis starter Dylan Toscano (3-4) was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs, all earned, on five hits in 1 1/3 innings. Toscano walked two and hit two batters while striking out three. Kane Barrow paced the Tigers offense with two hits, but the U of M was out-hit 14-9 in the game.
The Tigers return to action on Friday with a three-game series at Cincinnati. The series begins Friday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m. (CT) in Cincinnati, Ohio.
