Tiger juniors Adam Amar and Bill Moss combined to go 6-for-9 with six RBI to lead Memphis to its third-straight victory, 9-4 over UAB in the series-opening contest between the two schools. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday due to inclement weather forecasted for Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
Tiger freshman starter Scott McGregor got off to a rocky start, giving up two first-inning runs on a two-run double to leftfield by Phillip Bell.
Memphis answered in the first when Will Petersen shot a one-out doubled to rightfield and Amar produced his 118th RBI with an infield single. The Tiger first baseman moved into the U of M top-10 with the run-producing hit and finished with four RBI.
The Tigers again answered a UAB run in the third with two tallies in the home half of the inning. Again it was Amar who came up with the clutch hit, as he drove a two-out triple into the rightfield corner to bring Cory Barton and Moss home to tie the game at 3-3.
McGregor, who picked up his fifth win of the year, shut the Blazers down over the next three innings, while the Tiger offense erupted for four runs in the fourth, and scored another in the sixth for an 8-3 cushion. Ben Grisham highlighted the fourth inning with a three-run blast over the centerfield wall--his second in three games. Moss homered to center in the sixth.
Ryan Lovdahl homered in the seventh to cut the Memphis lead to 8-4, but Amar struck again with an RBI-single to give the Tigers the 9-4 final.
Freshman Matt Yokley pitched a pair of scoreless innings for Memphis. Jacob Legg took the loss for UAB.
Petersen and Joey Lieberman posted two hits each in the contest. Grisham had three RBI. The Blazers outhit the Tigers 15-13 in the game.
