Six Runs Scored With Two Outs Carry Memphis Past UAB 6-2
May 5, 2012
Memphis (22-24, 10-10 C-USA) scored four runs in the eighth and knocked off UAB (26-22, 7-10 C-USA) 6-2 to clinch the series at FedExPark on Saturday.
Eli Hynes ripped a double to deep centerfield with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth and the Tigers broke a 2-2 tie. Derrick Thomas followed with a two-out double down the left field line to drive in the sixth run of the day with two outs. UAB knotted the score at 2-2 in the eighth as pinch-hitter Ryan Prinzing was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and one out. Memphis starter Sam Moll allowed a leadoff single in the eighth and issued a one-out walk, but he struck out Ryan Ussery to put two outs on the board. The Tigers elected to go to the bullpen and Jonathan Van Eaton entered the game, issuing a walk to the first batter he faced to load the bases with two outs. Prinzing was hit by the pitch, but Van Eaton forced a fly out to right to strand the bases loaded.
Moll faced little trouble in the first four frames as UAB mustered two hits. A two-out double in the third was the Blazers first hit of the afternoon, but Ivan De Jesus was stranded at second in the inning. In the fourth, UAB leadoff man Jeff Schalk doubled down the right field line but Moll forced three-straight outs to strand another UAB runner in scoring position.
UAB starter Ben Bullard held the Tigers without a hit in the first three-and-two-thirds innings, but a solo home run by Adam McClain gave Memphis a 1-0 lead. Back-to-back doubles by Eli Hynes and Derrick Thomas added a run in the inning. For Thomas, it was his fourth two-out RBI in the last five games.
After stranding a runner at third in the fifth inning, UAB produced a two-out RBI as Tanner Bryant single to left to cut the Memphis lead to 2-1. Schalk singled to right with one out and a two-out walk brought Bryant to the plate with runners on first and second. Bryant laced a single to left and Schalk beat the throw to the plate to score the run.
Moll recorded his ninth quality start of the season as he allowed two runs on five hits in 7.2 innings of work. Bullard (5-5) was tagged with the loss as he allowed four runs on four hits in 7.2 innings on the mound. Hynes paced the Tiger offense with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with three RBI and two doubles. Thomas added two RBI in a 2-for-4 afternoon.
The Tigers host the Blazers in the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. The U of M will retire the jersey for the late Charlie Lea in a pregame ceremony scheduled for 12:40 p.m. at FedExPark.
