Baseball Wins 9-4 At Arkansas State
May 7, 2002
JONESBORO, Ark. - Senior catcher Barrett Smith was 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI to help the Tigers snap a six-game winning streak with a 9-4 win over Arkansas State at Tomlinson Stadium in Jonesboro, Ark., Tuesday night.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead when junior first baseman delivered an RBI double that scored sophomore left fielder Josh Payne in the top of the first. After the Indians pulled even with a run in the bottom half, Smith delivered a line drive solo shot to start the second inning and the Tigers never looked back.
Payne scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman shortstop Brent Dlugach in the third and Smith stroked his second home run - a 400-plus foot, two-run shot over the centerfield wall - to put the Tigers up 5-1.
Freshman starter Daniel de Armas allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out three for the win and seniors Matt Krabbe and Gabe Council as well as Payne combined to preserve the victory in a contest that was called after the eighth inning due to heavy lightning. Payne fired 1.1 hitless innings of relief and struck out two.
Payne and Gesell were a combined 4-for-7 with five runs and an RBI, while senior designated hitter Jay Fik was 2-for-3 and freshman second baseman Chris Godwin doubled twice to help pace the Tiger offense.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday when they head to St. Louis to take on the Billikens in the first game of a three-game Conference USA series at the Billiken Sports Complex.
