Houston Takes Game Two From Tigers, 6-2
May 8, 2004
HOUSTON - The University of Houston broke open up a close game with a three-run seventh inning to claim a 6-2 victory over Memphis in Conference USA baseball action Saturday at Cougar Field. Houston starter Kevin Roberts limited the Tigers to three hits over seven innings as the Cougars (23-25, 14-9 C-USA) clinched the series with their game two victory.
Memphis third baseman Bill Moss had two of the Tigers' five hits in the contest to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Chad House belted a solo home run in the third to extend his hitting streak to eight.
The Tigers loaded the bases in the first, but came up empty as Roberts pitched out of the jam striking out Kyle Scott looking to end the frame. That was the first of a career-high nine punchouts for Roberts who improved to 4-5 with the win.
Roberts held the Tigers scoreless until House led off the third with a solo home run. Hankins was sharp through the first three innings including striking out the side in the home half of the third. But the Cougars got to the Memphis right-hander in the fourth leading off the frame with three consecutive hits.
Cole Bruce started the inning with a double to right-center, then moved to third on a single by Brad Johnson. After fouling off a pair of sacrifice attempts, Roberts knocked in Bruce with an infield single.
Stuart Musslewhite then reached on a fielder's choice as the Tigers forced out Roberts for the second out of the inning. The Cougars added a fluke run when Musslewhite stole second as a good throw by Tiger catcher Kurt Welch sailed into centerfield when no one covered the base allowing Johnson to score from third.
Houston added a run in the sixth on a RBI-single up the middle by Musslewhite. Johnson singled to lead off the frame, moved to second on a groundout by Roberts and stole third to set up the run.
In the seventh, the Cougars put the game out of reach increasing their lead to 6-1. Thanos Papavasiliou had an RBI-single, Johnson added a RBI-double and Nick Bott drew a bases loaded walk off reliever Corey Kines.
Roberts (4-4) allowed just one hit after House's home run in the third over his final four innings of work. Hankins (6-5) took the loss allowing five earned runs in six innings. He struck out seven.
The Tiger Memphis managed to get one run back in the eighth off Cougar reliever Justin Vaclavik to cut the lead to 6-2. Bill Moss led off the inning with his second single of the night and scored on a RBI-double down the leftfield line by Brent Dlugach. The Tigers' shortstop moved to third on a wild pitch, but was left stranded there. The series concludes Sunday with game three set for 1 p.m.
