May 8, 2011
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane scored 10 runs with two outs and dropped the University of Memphis baseball team for a 10-3 win and a series victory on Sunday.
Memphis got on the board first with an RBI-single by T.J. Rich. After Drew Martinez hit a one-out single and stole second, Chad Zurcher walked to put the pressure on Tulane. Rich came to the plate with two outs in the inning and provided his 47th RBI with the single to left to give the U of M a 1-0 lead.
Tulane got the bats going in the fourth inning with a two-run home run by Bowen Woodson. Tiger starter Clayton Gant allowed just two baserunners in the first three innings, but the two out home run gave the Green Wave a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back singles put runners on the corners for Tulane and Brennan Middleton singled to center to drive in another and give Tulane a 3-1 lead.
The Green Wave kept the pressure going with a one-out single and a double to put runners on second and third. Memphis elected to go to the bullpen and called upon freshman southpaw Erik Schoenrock. The lefty would force a groundout to third by Matt Ryan and keep the runners on second and third. Schoenrock would get another groundout to end the inning, but Tulane scratched across a fourth run after a throw following a second pitch to Woodson from catcher Phillip Chapman got away.
The Tigers used a leadoff single by Jacob Wilson and a walk to Rich to put the first two runners on in the sixth. After Chapman flied out to center and Wilson advanced to third, J.D. Wallace hit a sac fly to center to cut the Green Wave lead to 4-2.
Tulane loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth and a walk to Jeremy Schaffer gave the Green Wave a 5-2 lead. Nick Schneeberger hit a two-RBI single to right field to increase the Tulane lead to 7-2. Dane Sharp walked the bases loaded, but a groundout to third would end the inning and strand the bases full.
Back-to-back singles by Ethan Gross and Ford Wilson set the table for the top of the Tigers order. Martinez grounded out, but the runners advanced to scoring position and Zurcher would single through the left side to cut the lead to 7-3. The U of M had runners on the corners with one out, but couldn't scratch across additional runs.
The Green Wave extended the lead once again in the seventh with an RBI-single by Brandon Boudreaux. Tulane used a walk to load the bases and Schneeberger would drive in two with a single through the left side of the infield. With the three runs in the seventh, Tulane increased their lead to 10-3 and all 10 of the runs came with two outs.
Gant allowed four runs, three earned on seven hits and he walked two and struck out two Green Wave batters. Six Tigers recorded hits in the game, but the U of M was out-hit 12-6.
Memphis returns to FedExPark for a midweek matchup with Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
