Utley's 10 strikeouts are the most by a U of M pitcher since Derek Hankins sat down 10 against Saint Louis back in 2004. With the win, Memphis earns its third Conference USA series win of the year and clinches a spot in the eight-team C-USA Tournament in Houston, May 24-28. The Tigers broke a 4-4 tie with a four-run rally in the top of the fourth inning to take control of the contest. Michael Murray ignited the offensive eruption with a single through the left side and Alex Fennell and K.K. Chalmers followed with consecutive walks. Will Petersen put Memphis on top 6-4 with a two-run double to the left centerfield gap. A sacrifice fly by Bill Moss and a single by Adam Amar made it 8-4. For the second consecutive game, UCF got on the board first after Matt Ray and Chadd Hartman singled. A sac bunt moved both runners ahead a base, and Ray scored the game's first run on a groundout Memphis answered in the second after Amar led the inning off with a double off the centerfield wall and tied the ballgame at 1-1 when he scored on Murray's single to right. Memphis wasted no time taking the lead in the tilt behind third-innings singles from Chalmers and Petersen. Moss scored Chalmers on a lined double that got over the head of UCF leftfielder Ryan Williams. The double was Moss' 21st of the year and ties him for third on the Tiger's single-season doubles list. Memphis went ahead 4-1 on sac flies by Amar and Robbie Goss. Centerfielder Dave DiNatale's bases-clearing, bases-loaded triple into the leftfield corner highlighted a two-out rally in the third that Golden Knights tie the game at 4-4. Petersen and Amar led the Tigers with three hits each, while Murray chipped in with a 2-for-4 effort. The Golden Knights outhit Memphis 13-12. Brett Bordwine was the losing pitcher for UCF. He gave up eight runs on eight hits in just 3.2 innings of work. The Tigers look to complete the series sweep tomorrow with the finale set for a Noon first pitch.
