May 14, 2002
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior centerfielder Paul Reuer delivered the game winning run in a 5-4 Memphis win over Murray State at Nat Buring Stadium on Tuesday night.
Reuer, who led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to left field, stole second to put himself in scoring position as the potential go-ahead run. Reuer then created the game-winning run when he stole third with two outs and scored on an error by the Murray State catcher.
Senior catcher Barrett Smith delivered a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to put the Tigers up 4-2. The White Station graduate has hit five home runs in his last five games and has climbed from 12th to fourth on Memphis' all-time career home runs list. Smith is batting .375 with six home runs and 15 RBI over his last nine games.
Reuer and junior outfielder Paul Cookman combined to go 4-for-7 with four runs scored to pace the Tiger offense, while Smith extended his season-high hitting streak to nine games.
Junior right-hander Nick Rogers allowed just one unearned run on two hits and struck out five over 4.0 innings of relief for his first victory of the season.
The Tigers are back in action on Thursday, May 16, when they take on Charlotte in the first game of a three-game series at Nat Buring Stadium at 7 p.m.
