Memphis Cruises Past UT Martin 13-3
May 15, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis (26-26) scored 13 runs and pounded out 15 hits and reached .500 for the first time since March in the 13-3 defeat of UT Martin (13-38) on Tuesday at FedExPark.
Memphis used the long ball to grab the lead in the game as the Tigers collected their 39th homer of the season when Eli Hynes ripped his 11th homer of the season, a solo shot to leadoff the second. Two-out singles by Ford Wilson and Tucker Tubbs had the Tigers threating to add more, but UT Martin escaped the jam.
In the next inning, Jacob Wilson blasted a solo shot in the third to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Wilson's homer was his 16th on the year, most for a Tiger hitter since Dan Uggla hit 18 in 2001. With his 30th career home run, Wilson becomes the third player to reach the 30 HR plateau and needs one to tie Adam Amar for second all-time. Memphis again had back-to-back singles after a solo home run, but could not scratch across any additional runs.
UT Martin struck for three runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Back-to-back singles to start the frame put two runners on and a one-out single by Phil Sorensen plated the Skyhawks' first tally. An infield single loaded the bases and a single through the left side by Nico Zych plated the tying run. A passed ball allowed the go-ahead run to score, but a fielder's choice put out at the plate prevented another score for UT Martin.
The Tigers regained the lead in the fifth as the U of M scored three runs in the inning. Ethan Gross started it off with a single and Adam McClain followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Hynes drove in one with a single through the right side and Derrick Thomas added another tally with a RBI single through the left side of the infield. A sac fly by T.J. Rich gave the Tigers a 5-3 advantage heading to the sixth inning.
Memphis tacked on three runs in the sixth to open up an 8-3 lead. A leadoff walk to Tubbs followed by a wild pitch put a runner at second for Nate Rupiper, and he roped a single to put runners on the corners. Gross drove in Tubbs with a safety squeeze and Rupiper scored on a UT Martin error. Jacob Wilson reached on the error and came around to score on a fielder's choice RBI by McClain.
Two more runs crossed in the seventh to increase the lead to 10-3. Tubbs drew a leadoff walk moved to third on a single by Rupiper and scored on a sac fly by Gross. Rupiper came around to score on a RBI single by McClain. With the RBI single, McClain notched his 27th multi-hit game of the season.
Erik Schoenrock (2-2) picked up the win as he pitched 1.2 innings in relief and allowed no runs on one hit. Ten different players recorded hits for the Tigers and Hynes paced the club with three hits. Seven different players collected RBI and Gross and McClain led with two RBI.
Memphis closes the regular season with a three-game set at Houston beginning Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Game two is Friday at 6:30 p.m. and the regular season finale is at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
