Baseball Tops Charlotte, 7-4
May 17, 2002
Memphis baseball picked up a 7-4 win Charlotte at Nat Buring Stadium on Friday night.
Down 3-2 in through five innings, the Tigers posted six runs in the bottom of the sixth on a series of wind-aided base hits and three 49er errors. If not for a two-out, bases-loaded error on a ground ball by junior designated hitter Justin Thomas, the Tigers would have stranded three runners. The Tigers caught the Charlotte infield sleeping again when two Memphis runners scored on an infield hit by junior right fielder Paul Cookman.
Six different Tigers hit safely and Cookman's two RBIs led the Memphis offense. Senior catcher Barrett Smith was 1-for-4 with two runs to extend an 11-game hitting streak.
Senior right-hander Nick Steht allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and struck out two over 5.0 innings in the no decision. Junior reliever Nick Rogers struck out three over 2.0 hitless innings to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Charlotte in the final game of a three-game Conference USA series with the 49ers at Nat Buring Stadium at 1 p.m. Senior Day festivities begin at 12:15 p.m.
